Large-scale magnetic fields from hydromagnetic turbulence in the very early universe.

چکیده
We investigate hydromagnetic turbulence of primordial magnetic fields using magnetohydrodynamics ~MHD! in an expanding universe. We present the basic, covariant MHD equations, find solutions for MHD waves in the early universe, and investigate the equations numerically for random magnetic fields in two spatial dimensions. We find the formation of magnetic structures at larger and larger scales as time goes on. In three dimensions we use a cascade ~shell! model that has been rather successful in the study of certain aspects of hydrodynamic turbulence. Using such a model we find that after ;10 times the initial time the scale of the magnetic field fluctuation ~in the comoving frame! has increased by 4–5 orders of magnitude as a consequence of an inverse cascade effect ~i.e., transfer of energy from smaller to larger scales!. Thus at large scales primordial magnetic fields are considerably stronger than expected from considerations which do not take into account the effects of MHD turbulence. @S0556-2821~96!02712-9#

Protostellar Disk Dynamos and Hydromagnetic Outflows in Primordial Star Formation
Star formation occurs via accretion through a disk, which is likely to be turbulent, either because of gravitational or magnetorotational instability. Dynamo amplification of magnetic fields needs to be considered. As the disks are also stratified, the turbulence can be helical, with different signs of the helicity in each hemisphere. This provides a key ingredient for amplification of global s...
متن کاملHydromagnetic energy spectra from large eddy simulations
Direct and large eddy simulations of hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic turbulence have been performed in an attempt to isolate artifacts from real and possibly asymptotic features in the energy spectra. It is shown that in a hydrodynamic turbulence simulation with a Smagorinsky subgrid scale model using 512 meshpoints two important features of the 4096 simulation on the Earth simulator (Kaneda et ...

متن کاملPrimordial Magnetic Fields
The explanation of the observed galactic magnetic fields may require the existence of a primordial magnetic field. Such a field may arise during the early cosmological phase transitions, or because of other particle physics related phenomena in the very early universe reviewed here. The turbulent evolution of the initial, randomly fluctuating microscopic field to a large-scale macroscopic field...
متن کاملCosmic Ray History and its Implications for Galactic Magnetic Fields
There is evidence that cosmic rays were present in galaxies at moderately high redshift. This suggests that magnetic fields were also present. If cosmic rays and magnetic fields must always be close to equipartition, as they are to an order of magnitude within the local universe, this would provide a powerful constraint on theories of the origin and evolution of magnetic fields in galaxies. We ...
